High School Equivalency Diploma

The High School Equivalency Tests (HiSET) give those who left high school prior to graduating the opportunity to earn their High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED). The HiSET exam certifies your academic knowledge is equivalent to that of a high school graduate in the following subject areas:

  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • Civics
  • Mathematics
  • Language Arts - Reading
  • Language Arts - Writing

Frequently Asked Questions

In order to be enrolled in an Iowa HSED program, you must:

  • be 16 years of age*
  • not be currently enrolled or required to be enrolled in a secondary school (high school)
  • have consent of parent or guardian if under 18 years of age
  • if under 19 years of age, download and fill out the top portion of the form linked below, and have your most recent High School complete the bottom portion

* Students will not be eligible to take any of the official practice tests (OPT) or final exams (Actuals) until they are 16 years and 9 months of age, unless court ordered. 

The enrollment and orientation process typically takes 3 to 4 hours. During this time you will learn about the program, complete enrollment forms, take a pre-test in both Reading and Math, and meet with an Adult Education and Literacy team member to create a learning plan that will be your guide toward successful completion of the HiSET exam.

Please review the and do not hesitate to inform our team at the time of enrollment. Supply our staff with the required documentation and we will submit the Accommodations Request Form for you!

We have your parking costs covered! If you park in the 5th Street Parking Ramp and bring us your ticket, we can put a validation sticker on it that will cover the cost when you're ready to leave for the day.

Diploma & Transcript

Diplomas and Transcript are processed through after all six subject areas have been completed*. You will receive an email from our staff upon completing your final HiSET exam with instructions for ordering your Diploma and Transcript.

* If you are under the age of 19 and your original 9th grade class has not graduated yet, your Diploma will not be made available until the month of July after your original class graduates. However, your Transcript will be available right away, and that's what you will need in order to apply for college. If you need a letter of proof in the interim, we will be happy to provide that.
